Active Research
Hydroponic Nutrient Flux Modelling

Who’s Involved

Farm Urban

University of Liverpool

The Project

We’re researching how nutrients are used in hydroponic and aquaponic systems and where they end up, with the aim of increasing efficiency and reducing waste (by making sure more nutrients are in the plants and less are dumped down the drain/into rivers and the ocean).

We’re building viable small-scale urban farming systems

We’re measuring nutrient flow and yields within these farms, under hydroponic and aquaponic conditions

We’re comparing the nutrient usage efficiency between hydroponics and aquaponics to identify ways to increase the efficiency of aquaponics

We’re building a mathematical simulation model which can dynamically predict the nutrient transformation and food production capacity of an aquaponic system

And we’re testing whether the ways to increase the efficiency of aquaponics that we’ve previously identified are valid, using the simulation model.
