The Produce Pod is a compact open-source aquaponics system that allows you to grow fresh, healthy produce all year round at home, at school or at work. Aquaponics is a mini-ecosystem inspired by Nature; your fish fertilise your plants and your plants purify the water for your fish.
Almost any temperate leafy green plant can be grown in the Produce Pod, but we have had particular success with plants such as:
Up to 10 plants can be grown at a time and the plants will take 6-8 weeks to grow to a harvestable size from seed.
You will need 2-3 fish for your Produce Pod (we don’t supply these) and goldfish are ideal, as they are small and hardy and adapt well to life in the Produce Pod.
Maintenance is very straightforward, as the plants purify the water for the fish, so the only maintenance required is to feed the fish, top up the water every 2-3 weeks and occasionally give the tank a scrub if there is any algae buildup.
The Produce Pod comes with a grow light, so can be situated anywhere, even somewhere with no natural light (such as a basement). The Produce Pod needs to be plugged in to the mains, but has very low power requirements (roughly 10 watts).
Full instructions are provided and can be downloaded here.
The Produce Pod is an open source system, so complete instructions for building one yourself from scratch are available for the intrepid here.
Our head grow Sam, has made a video that describes how to build a Produce Pod from scratch.
